Art Rebels: Challenging Tradition and Shaping the Future

Grades 5-6

Monday/Wednesday 12:30-1:55

Certificated. Art

How can art change the world? In this exciting visual arts class, you’ll dive into major modern art movements like Impressionism, Cubism, and the Harlem Renaissance. You’ll see how artists use their work to challenge ideas, break boundaries, and express identity. Each unit will inspire you to create unique artwork using a range of tools and materials.

We’ll start with an exploration of Color Theory, developing an understanding of and skills for interpreting and using color in art. Next, we’ll discuss the French Academy and the way traditional institutions shaped the art world, setting the stage for movements that broke those rules. Then we’ll learn about the rebellious Impressionists, whose art was initially rejected by critics but later became famous, permanently changing artists’ understanding of perception and light.

After completing our own Impressionist masterpieces, we will study Cubism and create abstract artwork that pushes the limits of shape and form. During the Harlem Renaissance unit, you’ll encounter and create artwork inspired by a group of African American artists who used their creativity to fight stereotypes, spark change, and break down the barriers that kept African American artists’ work out of American museum collections.

By the end of this class, you’ll have learned about—and created—artwork that challenges norms, inspires change, and shapes the world around us!

Certificated. Art

Join Laurie and your classmates for a voyage of discovery in the art room this Spring. We will encounter artists and illustrators and use art to share our ideas, stories, and feelings. Each class will start with a Check in Circle. Circle time is a space for sharing observations, stories and ideas. We will discover artwork, enjoy stories and get excited about the art projects we’ll create! Monthly themes will inspire art stations for exploring materials, illustrating stories and learning new skills. We will learn about colors, shapes, lines, and textures and make beautiful artwork. We’ll use all kinds of interesting art materials and explore drawing, painting, and building. Every project will help you get better at using your hands to create amazing things! This class is inspired by the Discover Art Curriculum by Laura Chapman.
